Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College (KVCTC) will offer a Human Resource Certification Preparation workshop in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).  This program will provide an opportunity for human resource professionals to document their knowledge and skills. The training program will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays; Aug. 30; Sept 13; Oct. 18; Nov. 1, 15, & 22; Dec. 6 and 13, 2013.

The program is designed for HR professionals interested in earning their certification as either a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).  This course is also beneficial for individuals needing recertification credits, HR practitioners seeking to advance their careers, experienced managers who are new to HR, and mid-level managers pursuing a career change or promotion.

The six-module curriculum has been designed by subject matter experts from SHRM and will be taught by Betty McHale, a local instructor committed to the Human Resource field and who has earned the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification.  The program includes application exercises that develop specific human resource competencies and decision-making skills that are tested on the Human Resource Certification Institute’s (HRCI) Certification exam.  Ms. McHale has a strong reputation for student success in the certification exams.  92 percent of the students taking the PHR exam pass and 87 percent of the students taking the SPHR exam pass.

The six modules covered in the course include Strategic Management, Workforce Planning and Employment, Human Resource Development, Total Rewards – Compensation and Benefits, Employee and Labor Relations, and Risk Management – Health, Safety and Security.  Just prior to the certification exam, a comprehensive review of the materials covered in each of the six subject matter modules will be provided.

By attending this course, participants receive the benefits of an experienced instructor, practice questions for the certification exam, interaction with peers, online practice resources, and a structured classroom environment that enhances learning and helps individuals stay on track while preparing for the certification exam.  Participants can improve their workplace effectiveness immediately through discussion of real-world experiences and review of case studies with other HR professionals.

KVCTC has been recognized by SHRM and the Holmes Corporation for achieving an exam pass rate that surpasses the national average.  On several occasions, 100 percent of the students participating in KVCTC’s certification preparation program have earned the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designation.

The registration fee of $1,199 provides six SHRM Learning System Manuals, a Learning System CD ROM, access to the on-line SHRM Learning System Resource Center, practice tests including over 1500 questions, instructor handouts, and 48 hours of classroom instruction.  Students may also register to receive three hours of college credit or SHRM recertification hours.
