In 2011, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education placed the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine on probation. In March 2012, Joseph Shapiro, M.D., a nephrologist with more than 30 years of clinical, teaching and research expertise, was appointed the school’s new dean.
Jill Scarbro-McLaury grew up with a learning disability. She considers herself blessed to have parents who supported and advocated for her, doing everything they could to provide her with the care and support she needed. Because of her experience in understanding the challenges those with learning disabilities face, Scarbro-McLaury knew from a young age she wanted to help children like her who struggled.

After graduating from West Virginia University’s (WVU) School of Medicine, McClellan completed a plastic surgery residency at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Boston, which is an affiliate of both Tufts University and Harvard Medical School.
Tammy Jordan, the founder, president and executive pastry chef of Fruits of Labor, Inc., was on the road to corporate success. Her vision was to become the Martha Stewart of West Virginia. Her company, Fruits of Labor, Inc., grew most of its own fruits, vegetables and flowers.
